| IAO |
This formula is the principal and most characteristic formula of Osiris, of the Redemption of Mankind. I is Isis, Nature, ruined by A, Apophis the Destroyer, and restored to life by O the Redeemer Osiris. An alternative formula is where I is Father, O the Mother, and A the Child. In the true formula of the Beast 666, I and O are the opposites which form the field for the operation of A. See Liber Samekh, Point II, Section J. The Greek Iao Sabaoth stems from the Hebrew YHVH Tzaviot, normally translated as Lord of Hosts, a name of God in the Old Testament. |

| Imperator |
Latin for leader or commander. The Imperator is one of three governing offices at a temple. This office is further symbolised by the Egyptian Godform of Nephthys. |
| Imperatrix |
Feminine form of Imperator. |
| Initiate |
Someone who has undergone, or is about to undergo,
the primary rite of entry into a magical order or Pagan/Neopagan organisation. |
| Initiation |
A rite of passage ceremony marking entrance or
acceptance into a group or society. In the context of
Ritual Magick and esotericism, initiation is considered to cause a fundamental
process of change to begin within the person being initiated. The initiator, being in possession of a certain power or state of being,
transfers this power or state to the person being initiated, the Initiate. |
| Invocation |
Invocation is the bringing in or identifying with a particular
deity or spirit. Crowley wrote of two main keys to success in this arena: to enflame thyself in praying and to invoke
often. Bear in mind that for Crowley, the single most important invocation, or any act of magick for that matter, was the invocation
of one's Holy Guardian Angel, or Secret Self, thus allowing the adept to know his True
Will. See also Crowley's experience of invocation. See also
Evocation. |
| Ipsissimus |
The Ipsissimus is beyond all comprehension of those of lower degrees. The Ipsissimus is wholly free from all limitations, and exists in the nature of all things without discriminations of quantity or quality between them. He has identified Being and non-Being and Becoming, action, non-action and tendency to action, with all other such triplicities, not distinguishing between any one thing and any other thing as to whether it is with or without conditions. He is sworn to accept this Grade in the presence of a witness (in Crowley's case this was Leah Hirsig at the Abbey of Thelema), and to express its nature in word and deed, but to withdraw
Himself at once within the veils of his natural manifestation as a man, and to keep silence during his human life as to the fact of his attainment, even to all other members of the Order. The Ipsissimus is pre-eminently the Master of all modes of existence, i.e., his Being is entirely free from internal and external necessity. His work is to destroy all tendencies to construct or to cancel such necessities. |

| Isis |
Isis was the first daughter of Geb (god of the Earth) and Nut (the goddess of the Overarching Sky). At
some time Isis absorbed some of the characteristics of Hathor a powerful deity who was the mother of Horus. She represented the pharaohs and provided them with protection. In later
myths about Isis, she had a brother, Osiris, who became her husband, after which she was said to have conceived Horus. Isis was instrumental in the resurrection of Osiris when he was
murdered by Set. Her magical skills restored his body to life after she gathered the body parts that had been strewn about the earth by Set. |
